“They” put out a lot of false narratives about elections in general, and hand counting specifically. From costs too much, takes too long, not enough people to count, to people cheat, people are not capable, and more, “their” talking points are parroted by media and public officials to make the public believe that hand counting is impossible. It’s not. Here are some hand counting truths:

What they won’t tell you is how much it costs to use voting machines. What they will tell you is that whatever it costs to use voting machines, hand counting will cost more than that.
Claims that hand counting is inaccurate often cite human error, with articles (NPR, Washington Post, 2022) alleging it’s too repetitive for people to handle. Yet, these sources admit there are few studies to support this.
If an election official is asked how long it will take to hand count ballots, and the answer is days, weeks, or months, it's likely they really don't know. They are just pushing out a myth that hand counting takes too long. Learn to debunk the myth.
Most countries have banned voting machines because of the risks. The United States is one country that continues to allow voting machines. But the evidence is mounting against voting machines and it is becoming evident that the end of the voting machine era is approaching.
Without evidence, myths will be spread that ballots can only be hand counted in smaller counties. But it is the size of the polling place that matters, not the size of the county. If a polling place has 480 ballots cast, does it matter if that polling place is in a large county or a small county? No - it will take the same amount of time to count 480 ballots regardless of county size.
