Hand Counting Costs vs. Machine Costs

One of the most common myths about hand counting ballots is that it costs too much. This is generally tied to the misconception that the labor costs for counters will exceed machines costs. But do they every supply actual reports or comparisons? Even a recent academic report published by Cambridge University Press could not give definitive costs for elections, never mind specific costs for the machines.
