Is Hand Counting Too Repetitive for Humans to Accomplish Accurately?
Elite athletes practice hours every day over years to develop muscle memory. Repetition develops skill mastery. Yet a common myth is that tallying votes is too repetitive for humans to accomplish with accuracy. Really? We had a gentleman at a training event tell us he worked at the John Deere factory — and if you want to see repetitive, come to the factory. Repetition brings about accuracy!
In the Missouri Hand Count Method, repetition when tallying votes is an important element of accuracy. Even more important is that incremental auditing is built into the process so that counters are double-checking their work at particular points during the count.
