While we can provide estimates for hand count supplies, down to the number of binder clips needed, it has been difficult for any citizen to obtain complete and detailed reports of expenses associated with voting machines. We tried in Osage County (MO). We know of requests submitted to other Missouri counties. We are aware of many, many people around the country who have made the attempt to gather the documentation and run the calculations themselves. Because, as far as I am aware, no elected or election official has produced a comprehensive report of voting machines costs.

Election Authority purchases approved by Council 2010-2023

Frustrated at being unable to obtain the same information for his county despite many request, Councilman Joe Brazil had his staff pull election expenditures that had been approved by the County Council. Those expenditures are included on the linked PDF.

Keep in mind that these are only expenses that required approval by the council. The election authority has an annual budget managed at their discretion. There will be additional voting machine-related costs in that budget. For examples of such expenses, visit Electoral Knowledge Network link.

Using Only the Expenses on the Council-approved list, We Show a $67,863 (minimum)

See Proof Hand Counting Costs Less than Machines to understand how the expenditures on this report were broken down to determine annual voting machine costs for St. Charles County, Missouri.
