“Disputed Presidential Election of 1876” The election between Rutherford B. Hayes (R) and Samuel Tilden (D) was highly contested and decided by one vote. The electoral votes of Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina were in question, and the dispute continued into March of the following year when Hayes was declared the winner.
