Plenty of People Ready to Hand Count

The Myth: Not Enough People to Hand Count

Clerks often claim there aren’t enough people to hand count, citing current election worker shortages. This myth ignores how many people are ready to hand count. A February 2025 Rasmussen Reports survey found 56% of Americans would volunteer to hand count on election night—far more than needed. In Campbell County, WY (16,370 registered voters), my Hand Count Estimator Tool shows only 2.96% (484 people) are needed to count in four hours, debunking claims of needing thousands.

Finding: Training Empowers Volunteers

Through Cause of America, we’ve re-trained people to hand count, restoring a skill lost to machines since the 2000s “hanging chads.” Training programs include:

  • Train the Trainers: A 6-hour class (in-person or online) equips trainers to teach others, creating force multipliers.
  • Express Training: A 60-minute session trains 5 to 500+ people at once, with online access for 24/7 learning.

In Oregon, nine counties trained 100+ trainers in 2023, calling it “easy-peasy.” Download Train the Trainers and Express Training materials to empower volunteers for hand counting.

Action for Elected Officials

People are ready to hand count — training makes it possible. Support policies to encourage training and hand counting for secure elections.
